1. How do I verify my credits have been reported to the REC?

The CE process is totally automated and available for licensees to check their own records by going to the PSI online CE tracking system. Here you can check for approved CE Providers, Courses, and verify your recorded credit hours. A link to this system and instructions on how to navigate the site are available on the Department’s Continuing Education page. If you are having trouble logging into the PSI site, please contact PSI directly by clicking the “Support” tab located in the “log in” area of the PSI Welcome screen or call 877-526-6833.

2. What are the CE requirements?

Each licensee must take a total of 12 credits.  At least 6 of the 12 credits must be obtained in courses within the “core topics”.  The 6 core credits shall include at least 2 credit hours on ethics and at least 1 credit hour in Fair Housing & NJ Law Against Discrimination.  The remaining 6 credits can be “electives” or core. The Notice of Proposal and the Notice of Adoption must be read together to see the complete rules as finally adopted.

3. How many continuing education hours will be required to renew or reactivate a license?

In order to qualify for renewal or to reinstate an unrenewed license, every individual licensed as a broker, broker-salesperson ord salesperson must complete a minimum of 12 hours of CE.

4. If I take more than 12 CE credits will the extra credits roll over to the next term?

No. CE credits do not roll over for credit in the next licensing term.

5. Can I take the same course more than once in the licensing term?

No, you cannot receive credit for the same course twice in a licensing term.

6. Are there any mandatory course subjects?

At least six of the twelve credits must be obtained in courses within the “core topics,” specified at N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.4.  The six core credits shall include at least 2 credit hours on ethics and at least 1 credit hour on Fair Housing & NJ Law Against Discrimination.  The remainder can be electives or core. More information...

7. I’ve been a broker for 40 years or more.  Will I be grandfathered in and waived from CE?

Yes.  The law does include aprovision for a waiver of the CE requirement for brokers only based upon length of time in the business. Please see link to the application.

8. What do I do if I did not get all my CE hours by my license expiration date?

You will not be able to renew and your license will expire.  You must then complete the CE requirements, complete the process for reinstatement and pay the necessary fees.

9. I just received my salesperson’s license.  Do I need CE in this license period?

You do not need to take CE if you became licensed within the second year of the licensing term. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(3). (i.e. for this term, license issue date AFTER July 1, 2020)

10. Will I get credit for taking a broker prelicensure education course?

Yes, any person who completes a NJ broker course within the two year license term is deemed to have fulfilled the CE requirement for the licensing term in which the broker’s course was completed. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3(a)(2).

11. How do I report my CE?

CE hours will be reported by the provider of the course to the vendor maintaining the database of credits obtained by licensees (currently PSI). You should retain the proof of your completion of a course that is required to be supplied to you by the course provider in case any questions arise regarding your completion of the course and your earned CE credits.

12. Where can I find a list of approved providers as well as a list of approved courses?

Visit the NJ Real Estate CE Tracking website administered by PSI.

On the Welcome page you will see a “Course search” and a “Find Provider” tab. To check for approved Providers, click the Find Provider tab.  Fill in as many search fields as you choose. Click “search” and all Providers who meet the exact criteria you entered the contact information will appear at the bottom of the page. If they do not appear, they are not currently NJ approved. For a full list of all approved Providers, do not fill in any of the fields and click the Search tab.

For the Course search, you will see a list of all the currently approved NJ CE Courses with the approved Providers for that course to the far right. You can also narrow this search by filling in as many or as few of the search fields as you wish. Once you have identified a course you are interested in pursuing, you can click directly on the Provider’s name and the contact information will appear. Licensees register for courses directly with the Providers.

13. I have real estate licenses in more than one state.  Will my CE credits from those states be transferable?

Only if the courses are approved for CE credit by the licensing authority in the other state, have also been submitted and approved for NJ CE credit, have been assigned a NJ CE course approval number by the Commission, and are in an elective topic.  See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.13(b).

14. If I also have a New Jersey appraiser license or mortgage banker, broker or loan originator license, will the CE credits I earn toward those credentials apply towards my real estate CE credit requirements?

Only if the course is approved as a pre-licensure or continuing education course in this state in a profession related to real estate brokerage and the provider has obtained a NJ Real Estate Provider and course identification number from the Commission, you can earn elective course credit toward the real estate CE requirement. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.13(b).

15. Are all real estate licensees required to complete continuing education in order to renew/reactivate their licenses?

All salespersons, broker-salespersons and brokers are required to fulfill the required CE requirement in order to renew their license or reinstate an un-renewed license.  A licensed referral agent is not required to complete CE, as long as they are renewing as a referral agent.  However, after July 1, 2013 they will be required to complete CE in order to change their license type to that of a salesperson, broker-salesperson or individual broker.

16. What is a Salesperson (Referral) License?

The amended law created the new license category of referral agent. A referral agent is not required to complete continuing education courses but, upon initial licensure and renewal, their brokers are required to review with them the restrictions imposed by law upon the brokerage activities of a referral agent and to certify to the Commission that they have done so.

17. Must an approved CE instructor teaching approved CE courses complete the required number of hours of continuing education?

If an instructor has an active salesperson, broker-salesperson or broker license, they are required to complete the CE requirement in order to renew that license. The instructor will receive credit for teaching an approved CE course offered by an approved provider, but can only earn the same number of CE credits granted to licensees who attend and complete the course. Regardless of the number of times an instructor teaches a particular approved CE course, the instructor can only receive the number of CE credits for that course once in a licensing cycle.  See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.3. Pre-licensure courses will not be counted towards instructor CE credit hours.

18. Can I get an extension of time to complete my CE credits to renew my license?

There are no time extensions to complete CE courses provided to licensees during renewal cycles. The late CE processing fee deadline is April 30, 2023 and the Licensing Renewal Cycle deadline is June 30, 2023.

The rules also provide for a limited waiver in cases of an incapacitating illness, active duty in the armed forces of the United States for one year or more of the two-year licensure period, emergency or other substantial and unavoidable hardship. Financial hardship, unreasonable delay and conflicts with personal obligations shall not constitute a basis on which the CE requirement may be waived. Waived elective credits need not be made up in the succeeding license term, but waived core topic credits must be made up in the succeeding license term by all recipients of waivers except those who qualified for the waiver based on their being on active duty in the military.  See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.5.

19. Can CE courses be offered at a broker’s office or other locations?

Yes, courses may be offered at a variety of locations as long as the provider, instructor and courses offered are NJREC approved.

20. Will there be distance learning and online courses available?

Yes, upon such courses being approved by the Commission and offered by approved providers, they will be available. Such courses may be offered in a variety of formats.

21. If I recently took real estate courses sponsored by my local Board of Realtors, can I use these courses towards my CE credits

No. There is no provision in the statute or rules that allows CE credit to be conferred for the completion of a course on which no application for approval is pending as of the date of the commencement of the course. There is a provision in the rules for an approved provider to offer courses that are pending approval and licensees may obtain credit if approval is subsequently offered. See N.J.A.C. 11:5-12.13(c).
