    The Library of Congress has compiled a directory, available in large print and Braille formats, which gives the names of volunteer groups and individuals who transcribe and record books and other reading materials for blind readers. The listing is alphabetical by state and is called Volunteers Who Produce Books. Contact the Library of Congress for your free copy.

    American Printing House for the Blind (APH)
    Publishes “APH Catalog of Accessible Books for People Who are Visually Impaired, 1996-1997,” a combined catalog that lists Braille and large-print books, recorded books, regular print materials, TEXT2000 electronic books, and video tapes; Braille maps of the United States and the world.

    Bower Hill Braillists Foundation
    Rates and turnaround time vary; call for more information. Nemeth, music, textbook, interpoint Braille, thermoform, some foreign language. Has a 1000-title lending library; call or write for a catalog.

    Braille Enterprises
    Specializing in Braille and large print menus, program brochures, greeting cards, certificates, and other material. No music. Can accept material on CD-ROM, disk, email attachment, via fax or hard copy. Bob Watson, Owner.

    Braille International, Incorporated
    “If it is in print, we can usually reproduce it into Braille.”

    Brailleit
    Flat rate of $10 per hour; cost estimate based on format and number of pages to be transcribed. Handles all formats.

    Braille Plus, Inc.
    Produces custom alternate formats including Braille, large print, audio tape, and electronic text file (disk). Includes college level mathematics and sciences and tactile graphics for inclusion with electronic format or audio format textbooks. Also produces alternate format conference presentation materials.

    Braille Plus, L.L.C.
    Guarantees 100% accuracy. Can produce documents printed in most foreign languages and mathematics. Transcribes textbooks, computer manuals, training guides, regulatory manuals, schedules, benefit statements, contracts, policies, programs, menus, and business cards.

    Clovernook Center
    Rates and turnaround time vary from job to job. No music, some math. Interpoint Braille. Materials on disk or in print.

    Label Specialties
    Braille and cassette labels.

    National Braille Press (NBP)
    NBP can handle large or small jobs of all kinds. Call for a free price quote.

    Some Mass Production, Some On-Demand
    AccessBraille
    Nemeth, Literary, Music, and Foreign Language Braille books and documents. Multiple copy brochures, business cards, and pamphlets. Certified Braille Transcribers. Contact for pricing.

    Associated Services for the Blind
    Cost: $.50 per Braille page. Turnaround time: varies. Transcription from print or IBM disk. Notes: $2 per page for music, math & computer-related material; all work is proofread.

    Braille Institute
    Cost: negotiable. Turnaround time: short job 2 weeks to 3 months, book-size jobs 6 months to 1 year. Transcription from print or IBM disk. No music. Occasionally they can handle Nemeth and computer-related materials.

    The Lighthouse
    Cost: If material is received on disk, the charge is $1 per sheet, includes both front and back of page. If materials are in print format, the charge is $5.50 per page for first copy and then $1 per page, same as disk.

    MSMT (Multiple Services Media Technology, Incorporated)
    Cost: fees vary starting at $.15 a Braille page. There is a $30 minimum charge on all orders. Turnaround time: short document 1 to 5 days, 10 to 30 for large documents, rush available for an extra charge. Transcription from print, modem, and IBM or Apple disk. Notes: No Nemeth or music, can handle computer-related materials, graphs, maps, charts or diagrams. Does not transcribe from Apple disks.

    VISION Community Services
    Cost: $.15 per page, for individuals; $.35 for non-profits; $1 if for-profit companies.

    Access USA
    Turnaround time: 2 weeks. Cost for 500 business cards is $59.95; includes name, company name, and phone number.

    AccuBraille
    Manufactures Braille signs to meet ADA compliance and for ATM machines. Call for pricing.

    Bartimaeus Group
    For simple Braille transcription in Grade I or Grade II, including Braille formatting: $1 per page. For extra services, such as proofreading, special formatting, or special code: $75 service fee per working hour.

    Braille Computer Center
    Preference is given to Colorado residents. Cost: $.10 per page for Colorado residents, $.15 per page for non-residents. Turnaround time: short document 2 weeks; 3 to 6 months for a large document. Transcription from print or IBM or Apple disk. No music or math, can do computer-related materials. No interpoint. Binding $2.25 to $4 per volume. No Apple disks.

    Braille Incorporated
    Rates and turn-around time vary with materials requested. Please call for more information.

    Braille Line, Incorporated
    Price quotes free upon request.

    Braille Production Program
    Rates: $.23 per Braille page and $3.50 binding per Braille volume. Primary objective is to provide school materials for children within the state of Massachusetts only.

    Cleveland Sight Center
    Rates are $.15 per Braille page, single sided only. Will produce material in thermoform, on Brailler, or on computer Braille embosser. Can accept material only in Apple Ed-It. Do math, Spanish, German, Russian, and French, computer Braille. Turnaround time varies from job to job. Binding is $2 per volume for spiral binding.

    CNIB Library for the Blind
    The CNIB Library’s National Transcription Service transcribes text books, journal articles, charts, restaurant menus, business cards, music, manuals, calendars, government documents – in fact any print document – into any format you need: Braille, audio, e-text or large print. Graphs, flow charts, maps, floor plans, and many other illustration needs can be produced as raised, three-dimensional tactile images.

    Computers to Help People, Inc.
    Produces Braille music using GoodFeel and MegaDots. Text is in Grade 2 and the music is in standard music notation. Currently charging $3 per Braille page of combined music and text.

    Dancing Dots
    Braille music technology, Lime or MIDI file $3.25 per Braille page, print score $4.75 per Braille page, set up $20 per hour (charged by quarter hour, minimum $5).

    Friendly Productions
    Special services directories for hotels, menus for restaurants, tactile maps, labels, and legal documents in Braille or large print.

    gh, LLC
    Provides translation of documents from print to Braille and also develops LaserLine graphics for clearly communicating complex visual information.

    Guild for the Blind
    Cost $.25 per Braille page. Priority is given to job-related materials, and turnaround time varies from four to eight weeks on average. Materials are accepted in print and on disk. Additional $3 charge per volume for binding and covers.

    Helping Hands Braille Ministries, Incorporated
    Braille produced from data entry, scanning, or computer disk.

    Louisiana Center for the Blind
    Cost: Depends on project. Turnaround time: 1 to 4 weeks, dependent upon length. Accepts material in print or on IBM disk.

    Metrolina Association for the Blind
    Conversion to Braille and large print. Monthly bank statements, credit card statements, utility bills, phone bills. School textbooks. One-time items. Currently serving approximately 7,000 vision-impaired customers per month.

    Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund
    Cost: fees vary from $.27 for literary to $.30 for Braille page for Nemeth. Turnaround time: two to six weeks. Transcription from print or disk. $1 for binding per volume. Order catalog for further information.

    Naperville Area Transcribing for the Blind (NATB)
    Acts as a central registry service for general-interest materials transcribed into Braille. Publishes “General Interest Registry Catalog of Materials.” Call for prices.

    National Braille Association, Incorporated
    Cost: $.35 per Braille page if ordered from agency. $1 per volume for binding.

    Northern Nevada Braille Transcribers
    "Jumbo Braille" available. This is a volunteer service, specializing in personalized transcription for deaf-blind. Cost: none (organizations are charged for paper and binding costs). Transcription often sent out quickly without any proofreading beyond the original transcriber. Large Cell Braille Lending Library. Personal transcribing for deaf-blind at no charge. Available manuscripts on loan to other interested Braille readers. Donations appreciated.

    Northwest Braille Services
    This nonprofit organization uses NLS-certified Braille transcribers. Materials are then thermoformed.

    Perspectives Total Accessibility Specialists
    Standard Braille signs, graphic Braille signs, room number signs, custom Braille signs, custom Braille items, custom taped materials, computer services, consultation services.

    Prose-Cons Braille
    Cost: $.28 for literary Braille or interpoint. $.26 per Braille literary page. $.50 per Braille page for Nemeth, or $.48 for interpoint Nemeth. Plastic covers $1.50 each volume, Braillewriter repair, clean, and oil $17.50, can be mailed Free Matter; please contact for further repair information and requirements.

    Quik-Scrybe
    Cost: fees vary depending on type of job. Turnaround time: short document 3 days to 3 weeks, large job (done piecemeal) 3 to 6 months. Transcription from print or Apple or MS-DOS disks. Notes: no Nemeth or music, can handle computer-related materials. Accepts VISA, MasterCard, or DiscoverCard.

    Services for the Visually Impaired
    No Nemeth or music, turnaround time negotiable. Charges $18 per hour and $.20 per Braille page, no interpoint. Binding fees included. Can accept material on disk only.

    TechAdapt, Inc.
    Will format your material using Open eBook (OeB), DAISY/NISO, or any other HTML/SML-based markup standard. Formatted works can be converted into electronic books (eBooks) in Microsoft Reader format, translated into Braille or incorporated along with digital audio recordings to create digital talking books (DTBs).

    Technical Braille Center
    Produces books in Braille, large print, and special file formats for scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who are blind, dyslexic, or paralyzed. Prices available at their Web site or contact them for an estimate.

    TFB Publications
    Cost: from $.15 to $.25 per Braille page, binding extra. Turnaround time: short document (less than 30 pages) under 1 week. Transcription from print, modem, or disk. Notes: no Nemeth or music, can handle some computer-related materials.

    Volunteer Braille Services, Incorporated
    Transcribe print into Braille. Accept material in print or on disk with print. Turnaround time depends on material. Large print production of printed textbooks, educational materials, and novels on request. Maintains a print/Braille Library of leisure and recreational reading material to children in preschool through grade 12.
