Housing to Suit the Needs of DHS Consumers

DHS tries to help its consumers find the type of housing best suited for their needs - accessibility, supportive services, transitional housing - but does not actually operate housing or provide housing.

Rather, DHS will contract with housing providers who, for instance, can offer services for a group home setting, with treatment or supportive services.

DHS also has referral services for finding accessible housing, usually through the NJ Housing Resource Center - which is a joint venture between DHS' Division of Disability Services and HMFC through the Department of Community Affairs.

The Division of Disability Services Hot Topics resource page keeps local, state and federal housing resource links on its website.

Housing Options for People with Develomental Disabilities...

The Division of Developmental Disabilities works to find community housing options for its Developmental Center residents who are ready to live independently within the community.

DDD Community Housing Options

DDD strives to support individuals by providing services that allow them to live in their own homes and be a part of their community.  Sometimes, however, it is not possible to continue to support an individual at home. In those cases, DDD can help an individual move to a place where services and individual supports can be provided.

Supportive Housing for People with Mental Health Issues...

DMHS contracts with and provides funding to residential and supportive housing providers in each county.  These services are listed in our publication of services under Residential Services, Homeless Services and Supportive Housing, in the directory below:

Housing Opportunities for the Blind and Visually Impaired

New Jersey Community Housing Demonstration Programs (NJCHDP) creates housing programs that serve a specific target population(s) and assist project sponsors.  NJCHDP helps by providing low-interest financing to develop innovative and flexible housing opportunities for individuals and families seeking affordable housing with supportive services in independent community-based settings.

Supportive Housing for Individuals in the Addiction Recovery Process...

In support of the Division of Addiction Services' vision of client-centered, recovery oriented care, DAS provides access to an array of needed services to ensure a supportive and sustainable recovery process, which includes supportive housing.  Two primary housing options are currently offered through DAS funding:  Supportive Housing and Oxford Housing.

The Division of Family Development provides emergency assistance, which can sometimes include temporary housing assistance, for people who may be affected by many different life-changing circumstances.  Here are some DFD resource page links.
