Superstorm Sandy Child Care Program Grants

Accepting applications through May 16th, 2014.

Funding is available for two programs that will help New Jersey’s child care centers to recover and rebuild after Superstorm Sandy.

  • $1 million dollars is available for repairs and renovations, earmarked for licensed child care centers.
  • $1 million dollars is available for essential material and supplies, earmarked for licensed child care centers and registered family child care providers.

Funding is applicable only in the nine significantly impacted counties of: Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Union.

 These programs are funded with a federal Social Services Block Grant administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Division of Family Development.

Materials and Supplies Grants
Licensed Child Care Centers: Up to $3,000
Family Child Care Providers: Up to $1,500

Repairs and Renovations Grants
Licensed Child Care Centers: Up to $50,000


Licensed Child Care Centers (for-profit and not-for-profit) and Family Child Care Providers located in one of the nine most impacted counties (Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Union).

General Requirements

Funds can only be used for unreimbursed renovation/
repairs, and loss of supplies/materials directly resulting from Superstorm Sandy and not covered or reimbursed by insurance, FEMA, other grants, or charitable organizations.

If during the term of the grant, a claim and/or other grants/funding are received, the grantee will be required to return the funds to DFD.

Documentation and verification, i.e. estimates of renovation, receipts, expenditure report, and affidavit are required.

On-site visits will be conducted for all repairs/renovation awardees; and awardees of materials/supplies grants are subject to on-site visits.

Selection Process

An assessment and application process will be conducted for renovation/repair grants and materials/supplies grants.

Applications and the required documents will be reviewed within 30 days of receipt.

The grant awards will be issued within 60 days of the approval.

Child care subsidies are available for families who were displaced and/or lost employment as a direct impact of Superstorm Sandy.
