Overview

In May 2011, Governor Christie signed into law N.J.S.A. § 52:16A-110 requiring the Department of State to maintain, in a single, accessible location, a directory of State departments and agencies that provide resources to assist nonprofits in their daily operations.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) developed this online resource for nonprofits in New Jersey seeking to utilize various funding sources and volunteer opportunities available through the Department.

These resources include available funding sources offered by NJDOT (along with eligibility criteria for such funding), various volunteer opportunities available with or through the Department and other information related to nonprofit operation, such as forms and guidance documents.

Civil Rights
Youth Corps' Urban Gateway Enhancement Program

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) youth corps initiative is a federally funded, community service grant program, which is designed to partner NJDOT with not-for-profits, community-based organizations or other entities with established youth programs who carry out transportation-related gateway enhancement projects. One of the fundamental benefits of the program is funding for youth employment. Youth participants gain valuable work experience through employment on small, community gateway enhancement projects. They also gain a sense of community pride by engaging in paid, productive community service work. NJDOT benefits from the enhancement projects which improve the appearance of State roadways in urban areas.

The next program is anticipated to take place in 2023. For additional information, contact Chrystal Section at 609-963-2046.

Maritime Resources: National Boating Infrastructure Grant

National Boating Infrastructure Grant (NBIG) Program funds are provided through the US Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service to states “to construct, renovate, and maintain tie-up facilities” for transient, recreational vessels 26 feet or more in length, and are distributed annually. Interested parties must review the final Federal Register announcement regarding the particulars of the program.

NJDOT is currently accepting Letters of Interest (LOI) for the NBIG program.

Transportation Alternatives

The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) provides federal funds for community based "non-traditional" projects designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation's intermodal system. TAP projects must relate to surface transportation.  Nonprofit organizations will not be directly eligible to apply for this solicitation. However, nonprofit organizations may partner with a local public agency that will assume responsibility and administration for the grant.

NJDOT is not currently accepting applications for the Transportation Alternatives Program.
