Scenic byways highlight transportation corridors that have outstanding scenic, natural, recreational, cultural, historic or archaeological significance. They represent the uniqueness and diversity of the state and together the byways tell stories about New Jersey’s history, natural features, recreational opportunities and beauty.

The New Jersey Scenic Byways Program was started as part of a larger national program that was established in 1991 by Congress under the management of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The program was created as a voluntary, community based, grassroots initiative to promote the recognition and enjoyment of America's memorable roads. In New Jersey the Department of Transportation leads the Scenic Byways Program, which connects and supports the various interest groups working to maintain New Jersey's unique features, distinctive places and diverse communities while improving livability and quality of life for residents and visitors. This program provides a framework for communities to create a management strategy and to develop plans that balance development, conservation, tourism and economic vitality.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation invites sponsors to nominate roadways for designation as a scenic byway.
