Route 1 northbound resurfacing project
to start in Edison
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a project to resurface more than four miles of Route 1 northbound from just south of Woodbridge Avenue (CR 514) to the vicinity of the I-287 interchange in Edison Township, Middlesex County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon, Inc., is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation this week. Mainline milling and paving work is scheduled to begin later this month.
The approximately $3 million project will mill and resurface Route 1 northbound with a new surface course of asphalt pavement to improve safety and operability along this stretch of highway. The existing pavement condition is deteriorated and in need of repair.
Work requiring single and double-lane closures will be performed at night in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 1. Northbound ramp repaving work within the project limits will require periodic nightly detours.
New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 1. Dynamic message signs will notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes. The project is scheduled to be completed this winter 2012.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for real-time travel information.
