Railroad-crossing repairs begin this week
on Route 49 in Bridgeton

Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of Route 49 this week in Bridgeton, Cumberland County.

Beginning at 7 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, June 23, until 7p.m. Monday, June 26, the two-way traffic on Route 49 is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing between Buckshutem Road/CR670 and Manheim Avenue. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach. The following detours will remain in place:

Route 49 westbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling west on Route 49/East Commerce Street will be directed to make a left at the traffic light on South Burlington Road/CR638
  • Make a right at the first traffic light onto Buckshutem Road/CR670
  • Follow to the Route 49/East Commerce circle/interchange

Route 49 eastbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling east on Route 49/East Commerce Street will be directed to take the Mauricetown/Cape May exit at the traffic circle/interchange
  • Bear left at the fork onto Buckshutem Road/CR670
  • Make left at the traffic light onto South Burlington Road/CR638
  • Make a right at the traffic light onto Route 49/East Commerce

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Bridgeton, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
