NJDOT launches Facebook page to share
innovative projects, programs and operations directly with the public

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the launch of a Facebook page to highlight the Department’s innovative projects and programs that help ensure New Jersey’s transportation system operates safely, effectively and efficiently.

“Facebook provides a platform to share with the public the great work of our dedicated employees and the many NJDOT projects and programs that improve the quality of life for everyone who travels in New Jersey,” NJDOT Acting Commissioner Dianne Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. “The Department has a responsibility to show the public how we are spending the 23-cent gas tax increase and utilizing social media will provide a valuable tool to keep the public informed.”

Using Facebook, we will highlight the innovative techniques and technologies NJDOT uses to maintain our state’s roads and bridges in good repair, like our nationally recognized drone program and our award winning construction projects. Posting photos and videos on Facebook will provide the public an ability to interact with the Department in a completely new way.

NJDOT also will use social media to highlight some of the programs that are important to maintaining a modern and integrated transportation network that do not always get a lot of attention. For instance, the Department has programs to promote bicycle and pedestrian safety, and there is a Bureau of Aeronautics and an Office of Marine Resources. Through the Facebook page, we will share information about these programs and offices so the public gets a better understanding of transportation throughout New Jersey, and the Department’s role in keeping people and goods moving.

“With so many New Jersey residents already using Facebook, this is an excellent way for the public to stay informed,” Acting Commissioner Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. “I would encourage everyone to follow and like the NJDOT Facebook page.”

NJDOT on Twitter as well

The Facebook page compliments the Department’s Twitter account, @NJDOT_info. The Department has been using Twitter since 2015 to keep the public informed about road conditions, construction updates, emergency road work, and Department news. We encourage you to share the @NJDOT_info Twitter account to help get the word out.

NJDOT also has Twitter accounts to provide real-time traffic updates for major highways in New Jersey that can help followers make informed decisions, save time and fuel costs, and avoid congestion.

The Tweets are created through NJDOT’s real time traffic Web site, www.511nj.org, which offers interactive maps and displays traffic incidents with real time traffic conditions on State highways, interstate highways, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. The web site highlights incidents, construction, weather and special events.

The 511nj Twitter accounts are one-way automated information feeds from New Jersey’s 511 service and are not consistently monitored by NJDOT or its partner agencies. They are provided as a convenience and are not intended for receiving feedback, comments, or event reports.

New Jersey law makes it a primary offense for motorists to talk on or text message with a hand-held wireless telephone or electronic communication device while driving.  NJDOT encourages all motorists to make use of these real-time travel alert services safely and responsibly.
