Office of the Governor

Whitman & Weinstein Meet with Parsons

NJ Gov. Christie Whitman and DOT Commissioner James Weinstein today met with James F. McNulty, Chairman and CEO of Parsons Corporation to express their concerns about Parson's performance and their proposal to remedy the problems associated with the enhanced motor vehicle emissions testing system.

"Commissioner Weinstein and I had a very frank and direct discussion with the chairman of Parsons. It is our position that his company has not yet fulfilled its obligations under our contract. We both made it crystal clear that we will accept nothing less than full compliance," she said.

"Both the State and the vendor are dedicated to making this federally-mandated program work efficiently and with as little inconvenience to the motoring public as possible," she said.

"We obtained from Parsons a commitment for greater oversight by high-level corporate officials. At the same time we informed them that DOT Deputy Commissioner Al Ari will have day-to-day oversight responsibility for the project," she added.

"We have requested more detail from Parson's regarding the timelines included in the recovery plan. We also have asked for more specifics regarding the delivery, installation and utilization of software and hardware and the training of employees," she said.

"New Jerseyans have made it clear that they share our goal of improving air quality in the Garden State. They deserve a working automobile emissions inspection system that can help reach that goal," she added.
