Lettiere Announces Repairs of Fairfield
Township Rail Crossing

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Jack
Lettiere announced the replacement of the railroad crossing on
Shoemaker Road in Fairfield Township, Cumberland County.
The $85,000 project will replace the aging Winchester & Western
rail crossing by removing the old crossing and upgrading to new
asphalt approaches, improved drainage and a concrete crossing.
The project included erecting warning signs and pavement
markings to alert motorists of the upcoming rail crossing.
“Governor
McGreevey's ‘Safety-First' Initiative is a comprehensive effort
to use engineering, education and enforcement to make our roads
safer,” said Lettiere. “The safety investment are have
making in Fairfield Township is a prime example of the engineering
fixes that are central to the Governor's Initiative.”
The project
will begin on September 17, 2004 and is expected to be completed
within a week. The detour route for motorists will be as
follows: from South Avenue, traffic will run east onto
Shoemaker Road and right onto Clarks Pond Road. Traffic
running west will make a left onto Burlington Road.
NJDOT repairs
and rehabilitates existing railroad crossings throughout the State
as a part of its Safety Improvement Program. Annually,
NJDOT invests $4 million in the repair and upgrading of railroad
crossings, signs and warning lights, and improved visibility and
striping, all designed to enhance motorist safety. In addition
to this investment in Fairfield Township, NJDOT has fully rehabilitated
railroad crossings in Edison, Logan, Woodbridge, Paulsboro, Carney's
Point, and Cape May City.
“With $7 billion worth of goods flowing
through the State annually, New Jersey is one of the most important
commercial corridors in the country,” said Lettiere. “Our
goal is to ensure the safe and efficient transport of these goods
from our ports to the marketplace, and we strive to do so with
as minimal an impact on local communities as possible.”
