NJDOT announces new traffic pattern on Route 139 Holland Tunnel approaches rehabilitation project

(Trenton)- New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the June 22 start of a new traffic pattern on the Rt. 139 Holland Tunnel Approaches rehabilitation project in Jersey City.

Travel lane access on the westbound 14th Street viaduct will be as follows:

• The two left lanes will be closed from the viaduct entrance to the upper roadway exit ramp.

• The center lane will travel to the Route 139 lower roadway. Motorists will have access to two open travel lanes inside the lower roadway.

• The right lane will travel to the Route 139 upper roadway and local streets. Motorists will have access to two open travel lanes on the upper roadway.

• The far right lane will travel to the New Jersey Turnpike exit only. Wide load restrictions have been lifted.

NJDOT will extend the construction zone on the westbound 14th Street viaduct’s two left lanes by 500 feet in order to construct a new concrete deck, repair structural steel and install steel beams beneath the viaducts. The federally-funded, $225 million project will rehabilitate and reconstruct the existing, structurally deficient 12th and 14th Street viaducts. The Route 139 Approaches to the Holland Tunnel project is located in the Route 1&9 Historic District.

Variable message signs located on Jersey Avenue and 14th Street will provide information on the new traffic pattern and associated roadway conditions. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, weekly construction schedule updates and real time traffic cameras at https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/. Commuter information is available at www.trips123.com as well as on radio traffic reports. A bilingual Community Liaison is onsite to provide information for the local public. Interested parties should call 1.877.NJROADS.
