NJDOT to replace Route 22 bridge deck
over Rockaway River in Readington Township

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the replacement of the Route 22 eastbound bridge superstructure over the South Branch of the Rockaway River in Readington Township, Hunterdon County.

“Maintaining our existing infrastructure is a top priority for the Department,” said Commissioner James Simpson. “Route 22 in Hunterdon County will be a safer highway for motorists as a result of this important project.”

Initial construction operations will begin this week with the Route 22 eastbound right shoulder being closed to allow for the conversion of the existing sidewalk and shoulder to a travel lane.

On Friday, March 18, NJDOT is scheduled to shift Route 22 eastbound to the right to establish a construction zone on the left side of the bridge. To implement this new traffic pattern, single lane closures will be necessary overnight. Two lanes of Route 22 eastbound traffic will be maintained during daytime hours.

The bridge superstructure is being replaced in three stages. The first stage of construction, with the traffic shift in place, is expected to last approximately three months. NJDOT’s contractor, Rencor Inc., will construct a temporary bridge structure in the median of Route 22 to be used in the second and third stages of construction. This temporary bridge will be necessary to maintain two lanes of Route 22 eastbound during these future stages of construction.

The $2.2 million project will replace the existing structurally deficient bridge superstructure, as well as make repairs to the bridge abutments and pier. The bridge was built in 1945.

New curbing and guide rails will also be installed. NJDOT will then resurface Route 22 eastbound on either side of the bridge between Oldwick Road (CR 523) and Main Street. Construction is anticipated to be complete in spring 2012.

NJDOT held a Public Information Center in Readington Township in September, 2010 to allow interested residents the opportunity to view the proposed project design and schedule, and submit comments and concerns.

Variable message signs have been installed to inform motorists regarding any changes in traffic patterns. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
