I-295 northbound ramp to Route 1 to be closed and detoured overnight in Lawrence

Additional detours will be necessary as project advances

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the I-295 northbound Exit 67 ramp to Route 1 will be closed and detoured overnight as the pavement preservation and safety project in Lawrence advances.

Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Thursday, February 21 until 6 a.m., tomorrow, NJDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc. is scheduled to close and detour the I-295 northbound Exits 67 A - B ramps to Route 1 northbound and southbound to install construction barrier curbs.

Overnight Detour of I-295 northbound to Exits 67 A - B
(10 p.m., tonight, Thursday, February 21 until 6 a.m. tomorrow)

  • Motorists on I-295 northbound wanting to use Exit 67 A - B to Route 1/New Brunswick or Trenton will be directed to continue on I-295 northbound
  • Take Exit 68 B/Princeton Pike
  • Take Princeton Pike towards Trenton and stay in the right lane which becomes the ramp to I-295 southbound
  • Take Exit 67 to access Route 1 northbound or southbound.

When the Exit ramp is reopened Friday morning, traffic on the ramp will be shifted to the left side of the ramp allowing for guide rail improvements and parapet modifications. The lane shift will remain in place for several weeks. Construction will shift to I-295 southbound ramps upon completion of the northbound ramps. In addition, overnight ramp closures may be required next week on other ramps for lane shift implementation. Variable message signs will be used to alert drivers.

The $11.8 million state-funded I-295 pavement preservation and safety project will extend the pavement life of the roadway, improve safety and enhance ride quality for motorists with the application of a High Performance Thin Overlay treatment. Mainline I-295 and ramps from Lower Ferry Road to Route 1 will be slurry sealed, and guide rail improvements and parapet modifications will be made. The project is expected to be complete in spring 2019.

Variable message signs, lane closure and detour signs are being used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
