Series of Route 7 Wittpenn Bridge
weekend full closures announced by NJDOT
Drawbridge to be closed to vehicular traffic for maintenance repairs an estimated 9 weekends this year


(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a planned series of full weekend closures of the Route 7 Wittpenn Bridge over the Hackensack River for maintenance repairs movable bridge connecting Kearny and Jersey City.

Beginning Saturday morning, July 28 the bridge will be closed to motorists in both directions starting at 4 a.m. and is anticipated to be reopened by around midnight on Sunday, July 28.

• Route 7 eastbound motorists will be directed to take Fish House Road to Pennsylvania Avenue to Central Avenue and then continue to Route 1&9T northbound and return to Route 7.

• Route 7 westbound traffic will take to Route 1&9T southbound to Central Avenue and then continue to Pennsylvania Avenue to Fish House Road and return to Route 7.

The following eight (8) weekend closures are also planned to complete this work, utilizing the same closure intervals and detours listed above: 8/3/12, 8/10/12, 8/17/12, 8/24/12, 9/7/12, 9/14/12, 9/21/12 and 9/28/12.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.

In November 2011 NJDOT began construction on the first contract of a major project to completely replace the existing structure with a new vertical lift bridge on a new alignment approximately 200-feet to the north. Construction of the new bridge will be accomplished in four stages under four separate contracts. The initial, $64 million stage of construction will build the river piers and fender system for the new vertical lift bridge. The new bridge is anticipated to be open to traffic in 2018.
