Road Maintenance Problems

As a bicyclist, you are probably aware that roadway conditions are not always ideal on the portion of the road where bicycle traffic normally operates. The bicyclist may encounter a variety of problems, such as sand, gravel, broken glass, trash, sewer grates or utility covers, potholes, ridges and other forms of pavement deterioration.

What to do:

• For best results, bring the condition to the attention of the appropriate agency in writing (for state system roads, copy the New Jersey Department of Transportation Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator).
• Follow-up with a phone call (for emergency situations, call right away).
• Do not abuse this right. Don’t raise complaints over conditions you can live with. Reserve your complaints for serious problems and you’ll be taken seriously.
