Overview

This web site has been archived and is no longer being updated.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will improve the portion of Route 23 located in the Borough of Sussex and Wantage Township, Sussex County. Route 23 is a major highway that connects with Interstates 80, 287 and Route 94. This project involves the realignment of Route 23 and the replacement of the Route 23 Bridge over Papakating Creek and an abandoned railroad in Wantage Township. The Route 23 Sussex Borough Realignment will include the construction of stormwater management facilities to meet the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Stormwater Management Regulations and wetlands mitigation, to replace freshwater wetlands impacted by the project, in keeping with the NJDEP Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act Rules. This project will also address NJDEP Flood Hazard Area Control Act Rules.

Existing Route 23, in the area of the Papakating Creek Bridge and its approaches, consists of a divided roadway with a six foot minimum wide curbed median island, a 12 foot wide lane and a 12 foot wide shoulder in each direction. In the area of the Lower Unionville Road intersection, Route 23 has an additional turning lane at each intersection

approach. Through Sussex Borough, the existing Route 23 (Hamburg Avenue) is an undivided roadway, consisting of approximately a 30 foot wide roadway with a single 15 foot wide lane in each direction. The replacement of the Route 23 Bridge over Papakating Creek in Wantage Township will help eliminate potential safety hazards due to the poor condition of the substructure and bridge deck. The total length of the project is approximately one mile long.
