Route 35 Cooper's Bridge Replacement Project

Monmouth County

Linking Technology and Tradition for Two Monmouth County Communities

Travel Guide

During Construction of the Route 35 Coopers Bridge:

Be patient - it's worth the wait.
Starting approximately in the Fall of 1999, the Route 35 Coopers Bridge, considered the main thoroughfare between Middletown and Red Bank, will be reduced from 4 to 2 lanesone lane each way. Traffic across the bridge will be slow-going during peak travel hours. Construction activity may also cause rubbernecking.

Expect delays and plan alternate routes. Be flexible in planning and adjusting your own travel.
NJDOT will post variable message signs at key locations. Most routes connect to the Garden State Parkway.

From South Amboy south:
  • Use GSP to Exit 109 or Rt. 34 to Rt. 520.
  • Take Rt. 9 south to Rt. 18 or Rt. 34 south to Rt. 18.
  • Take the GSP to Exit 117 (Hazlet) and take Rt. 36 to the Jersey Shore.
From east to west or west to east:
  • Use Rt. 520, which connects to Rt. 18 (west) and Rt. 36 (east).
From north to south:
  • Use Rt. 4 (Holmdel Road) in Hazlet, which goes south to Holmdel Village. (Rt. 4 intersects north with Rt. 36 and south with Rt. 520.)
  • Take Rt. 516, which becomes Rt. 52 (Laurel Avenue).
To cross the Navesink River:
  • East of Middletown/Red Bank-Use Kings Highway East across Oceanic Bridge to connect with River Road/Front Street.
In addition to driving yourself, there are plenty of options and opportunities for getting around Monmouth County that will make your travel pleasurable. These include mass transit and ridesharing.

Use Mass Transit
NJ TRANSIT offers a variety of buses and trains, which can take you to destinations throughout the area. This is a great opportunity to try them out, if you haven't already done so. If you are planning to use the M24 bus, remember that it crosses the bridge. You may want to consider taking another bus, or make sure you allow enough time if you do use it.

Buses Serving Middletown and Red Bank:
  • From Middletown: M17, M23, M24, connecting with trains to the North Jersey coast
  • From Red Bank: M21, M22, M23, M24, M25, connecting with trains to the North Jersey Coast
Train Stations Serving Middletown and Red Bank:
  • Middletown: Railroad Ave. & Church St., 1/4 mile west of Kings Highway
  • Red Bank: Bridge Ave. between Monmouth and Oakland streets
For detailed information, contact NJ TRANSIT at 1-800-772-222, or visit their website.

Try Sharing the Ride
For commuting to work, try sharing the ride. You save money on fuel and car maintenance; you can gain camaraderie; you can relax, read, catch up on work, or even sleep; and you contribute to a cleaner environment by cutting down on exhaust fumes. For information on how to form a carpool or vanpool, contact KMM, the transportation management association for Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties, at 732-745-4490.

Stay Tuned to 530 AM
In the vicinity of the bridge you can hear 24-hour, up-to-the-minute information on construction, directions to parking/transportation sites for special events, and emergency weather/traffic information by tuning to 530 on your AM radio dial. Construction advisories will indicate status and construction updates.

Make This a Community-wide Effort
Remember: bridge improvement, like home improvements, require patience - and a bit of flexibility. Let's continue to work together so that we can ensure that the Route 35 Coopers Bridge Replacement Project is completed on time, and to the satisfaction of the entire community.
